Will eBay International Shipping Trap Authorized Resellers?

By: Reader

Dear Ina,

Re: eBay to Migrate All Sellers to International Shipping by Summer, Mulls New Feature (EcommerceBytes April 26)

eBay has done this a few times already where they simply opt in everybody and force sellers who realize it to fight with them to opt out.

For retailers with dealer contracts, many of us are only authorized to sell products in the US and Canada (and some to Mexico).

Sellers need to be able to control this on a SKU by SKU basis... I have yet to see the Opt Out feature.

You don't have to fight with Ebay to Opt out of EIS.  Once they enroll your account, simply go to your site preferences and Opt out.  It doesn't have to be complicated.

To control the stuff you need to, set up your Business rules to accommodate those listing.

Ebay is working on giving sellers the ability to turn off EIS at the listing level, but no word as when that will be available.

Isn't that interesting? They make it compulsory because they know a good amount of sellers won't realize it until some damage has occurred.  They are sleazebags.

eBay can't "legally" have me ship my items out of the US.

I buy US Government surplus and I sign an agreement not to sell the tools to foreign nationals or ship the items out of the US.

This should prove interesting and I look forward to seeing it implemented. lol

If seller choose NOT to read the email that is sent to them regarding the implementation of EIS, that isn't on Ebay, that is on the seller.  The email has a link to a form the seller can fill out so they don't have to use the program.  And there is a link to more info on the program.  So each seller can make an informed decision for themselves.  No need to let Ebay make the decision for you, you can do it yourself if you read the email.

Ebay's Email:
eBay international standard delivery is being upgraded to eBay International Shipping. All eligible sellers will be migrated to the new program by July 1, 2023.
eBay International Shipping simplifies international selling and delivers more benefits to you and your buyers:

No international selling fee
No international returns
Additional protections

To make this transition as effortless as possible, your account will be upgraded over the coming weeks, and all your eligible listings transitioned to eBay International Shipping.

You don’t need to do anything on listings that only offer eBay international standard delivery. They’ll be automatically updated to eBay International Shipping.

For listings that you regularly ship with eBay international standard delivery, we’ll automatically update those to only display eBay International Shipping as well – even when the listing currently offers other shipping options. If you would prefer to maintain other shipping options, please let us know by completing this form by May 10, 2023.

Thank you for selling on eBay.

The POINT here - which seems to go missing - ISNT about some email - its about modifying a sellers account/listings WITHOUT THEIR PERMISSION FIRST.

Its really quite simple, yet eBay cheerleaders seem to think its all OK

The emperor still DOESNT have new clothes.

“ No need to let Ebay make the decision for you, you can do it yourself if you read the email. ”

That’s the point.  eBay has already made the ‘decision’ for everybody instead of allowing the seller to make the decision to accept the ‘optional’ (it is optional, right, or why allow a ‘choice’?) program’s services themselves.

Filling out a form and trying to scramble to ‘exempt’ impacted inventory is not an efficient process to assimilate eBay’s latest ‘assistance’.  Making it incumbent upon the seller to act to prevent undesired, and in some cases illegal transactions not just “sleazy”, it’s thumb your nose disrespectful.

And if EIS were such a panacea for the challenges of international shipping, they’d be jamming the servers trying to sign up, and wouldn’t be compelled to “opt” in and then be forced to adapt after the fact.

And being upset by this can be AVOIDED if the seller actually takes the time to READ the email.  You may not like the email, that doesn't really have anything to do with anything.  There is a spot in the email with a link where you can go and fill out a little form so that you will NOT be opt'd into the program.

It is really quite simple!

But if you are a seller that doesn't read the emails, then that is a risk that seller has chosen to take as Ebay often informs us of important things via email.  Seller's choice of course.  But NOT Ebay's fault if a seller chooses not to read their emails.  That is on the seller.

The name calling is beyond OLD and lame.

Well yes and no.  Yes they intend on opt'd everyone into the program UNLESS the seller tells them NO via filling out the short form.  Seems to me that it isn't a big deal, just fill out the form.

If a seller decided not to read the email from Ebay can still opt out of EIS by going to their Site Preferences once they have been opt'd in and simply Opt out.

Whichever method the seller choses to do is completely up to them.  Either way works.

Is Ebay right to auto opt sellers in.  I personally don't think they should do this either, but the fact is they are and I've given you a couple of ways to get out of the program if you don't want to be in it.

However I would encourage anyone that is considering opting out of the program to read about the program first.  Make sure you understand the program before you decline.  Make an inform decision on your own, not because of what others tell you.

Wouldn't the better option be to send all sellers an email advising them of the new program and stating how to opt in, not opt out?

Of course it would, Jack lover.  And ‘missing’ it wouldn’t be a big deal, because that seller, if they actually DID want to sell internationally, (most don’t - so much for considering the ‘majority needs) those sellers would have plenty of resource to learn how - the eBay way.

But there’s a motivation at play here - eBay doesn’t meet the international sales targets it sets for ‘itself’.  Coercion is their answer.

And it’s not “yes and no’.  This isn’t just a case of ‘water off a duck’s back’ via workaround #1001a.   It’s another man-made deluge that need not have fallen, and unlike ‘nature’ one must adapt to or perish, it can be turned off.

That’s why the squawking has meaning, despite any ‘free umbrellas’ being offered.

Ebay does.  I posted it upthread a bit.  It tells them how to opt out if they want.

When Ebay sends an email to a seller.  It goes to that sellers email account they have registered with Ebay unless they opt'd out of getting such emails.  And it goes to their Ebay Email / messages.

In the Seller Hub on the upper left side it will tell the seller they have messages to review and it will remain there until the seller opens those messages or marks them read.

The POINT of the email Ebay sends out is the seller can AVOID / PREVENT the automatic enrollment into the program if the CHOOSE to.

And again, Ebay is Sending an Email.  Not sure how much clearer I can be.  But to help with this point, I will repost what I posted above for those that seem to have missed it.

I get it, but is this just a complaint just to have something to complain about.  When it comes to Ebay, it really doesn't matter what they do, it is never good enough for some and never will be.

@Marie: Why does eBay force people into something they might never have wanted in the first place, and then expect them to figure out how to get out of the program? This is not a reason to complain abut eBay, this about potentially ending up in a program that the seller never wanted to be in and might actually be detrimental to their business.

Jacksparrow,

Exactly! All eBay is trying to do is to up their GMV (which was down the last quarter) by forcing sellers into the program. Some people sell items that can not be sold outside of this country and they will get in trouble.

Look, all the sellers need to do is read the email and follow instructions.  I realize there will be some sellers that can't do that or are unwilling to do that,   Not sure what to do to help them.  The sky is not falling.  I think some want to make a bigger deal out of this than it actually is.  But you do have the right to do that.

Not sure how this program will increase the GMV, that is an interesting comment.  The shipping rates in EIS are cheaper.

Ebay is not going to require ANY seller to ship ANYTHING into a country that their products can not be shipped into.  Maybe instead of assuming things you might want to spend a few minutes reading the policy.

@Marie: I've read on this blog about sellers who were, unbeknownst to them, opted into one of eBay's global shipping programs, got an order from a foreign country that they could not legally ship a particularly item to, and then got negative feedback from the buyer which eBay would not remove.

Instead of setting up hurdles for their sellers, don't you think it would be better for eBay to be the "selling partner" they claim they are and let their sellers decide whether they want to be in a program or not?

“ I get it, but is this just a complaint just to have something to complain about.”

Nobody who refuses to acknowledge the (big) difference between what would be a SOLUTION to a concern and what amounts to a cumbersome and otherwise unnecessary METHOD for addressing it (no matter how often and condescendingly repeated) ‘gets it’.  Especially when they discount any discussion about it off-hand as nothing more than ‘sour grapes from the usual suspects’ in an attempt to equate the two and discredit dissent.

This isn’t about ‘eBay’.  It’s about how eBay has acted.  And would be about ANYBODY who similarly acted, because it would still be wrong.

eBay had a choice.  Enable the program as a ‘choice’ with minimal impact to both already stressed ‘processing’ and the majority of site users who have no need of this program.  Or enable it as compulsory unless those impacted leap through specifically (and unnecessarily) designed hoops.

The latter actually adds cost to the program though, by creating unnecessary (and subject to ‘glitch’) records, requiring (accurately translated and enabled) settings, and communications handling that would not be otherwise necessary to enact this great ‘enhancement’.  Guess who eventually pays for that?

It also takes up time that could otherwise be spent wrestling with eBay (like there aren’t enough obstacles already) to source, list, and try and actually sell something.

Anyone who wants to ‘get’ why eBay would choose to do this, effectively also discrediting any ‘inconvenience’ by pointing to a ‘method’ - repeatedly - as the answer for appearing to care, would have to acknowledge some motivation for this lack of operations logic too.

And eBay has only one motivation.  Money.  As much as they can get, by whatever means they can “get it’.  Better yet if nobody digs too deep or questions too much about how of course, right?
