Is eBay Technical Issue Depressing Auction Prices?

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
I sell at auction on eBay. My auctions are very popular which results in many last second bids.

For the past month or so I have received reports of buyers trying to bid and either their bid was ignored or somehow the countdown clock reset to allow another bidder to win. I have never received so many complaints like this before and wonder if it is a technical issue with a certain browser or something on eBay's part.

Anyway, it is very frustrating for me as I am powerless to do anything. Has anybody reported a similar issue?
D.

Note from the Editor: A check of the eBay Technical Issues discussion board thread shows the following: "Buyers are unable to see the items they are bidding on are not showing in the bids & offers page. They have to refresh the same page multiple times to see the items. (February 29, 2024)"

Also is it still happening, getting ready to run some good stuff on auctions, don't want to lose money if they can't bid

I would never sell anything on eBay auction.  Their wonky system of showing listings based on ads and promoted listings makes it too easy NOT to be seen.
Back in the day it was a fantastic venue (about 20 years ago) but not anymore.
I say this as a buyer that has picked up some incredible deals - to the point where I actually feel bad for the seller.

I have been a sniper on eBay since I found the site in 1998! I may occasionally place an earlier bid, but that is very rare. If eBay changes to the type of auction where an auction doesn't end until there's been 20 seconds or a minute or whatever without another bid, I will probably not be bidding on an auction there again.

I have sold on ebay 26 years. The first 20 plus years was almost exclusively auction type sales. I now 99% BIN. Auctions used to be 100% of the listing, now they are less than 10%. People have mostly moved on from the "auction" fad. I do still use it for a particularly rare item that I can find no price comps for but I now start it at a price that I will be OK with. Please note: arguably the biggest seller of antiques and fine art on ebay shill bids essentially every listing he creates. I have reported him over 100 times with blatant evidence but nothing happens.

I have a saved search set up to notify me when certain terms are used in listings. I have been looking for a particular item for years now. One came up on auction, starting at a very low price. I went ahead and bid at a much higher price, in a range I felt comfortable to pay for. There were a few bids made below mine during the week, then with about an hour to go someone bid more than me. But his bid was just above mine, more than the minimum next bid price, so I knew that was his top price. With about 10 minutes to go I bid an additional $10 higher, but I kept getting the "its us, not you" error page. Refreshing on the computer did nothing, I jumped on my phone to try and bid, and it ended without another bid from anyone. The seller missed out on more money, and I missed out on something I really wanted. All because the leadership at eBay refuses to fix the platform. The play around with the flush around the edges, but never dig deep in the engine that is failing. That's what you get when your entire IT team is paid $2 a day plus a bonus sandwich.
