Mercari Eliminates Selling Fees as It Adds Buyer Fees

By: Ina Steiner

Mercari is eliminating selling fees immediately, even as the costs of selling on other marketplaces continue to rise, but there are some caveats for sellers. The marketplace is introducing buyer fees, and it's instituting a very buyer-friendly returns policy, explaining in an announcement going out today:

"In addition to zero selling fees, Mercari is simplifying the buying experience with an all-new returns policy. As part of this policy shift, buyers will be charged a service fee allowing for hassle-free returns. For the first time ever, Mercari shoppers can now initiate a return within three days for any reason with the assurance of a refund, less applicable fees."

Mercari said the removal of selling fees will enable sellers to price their items more competitively and take home more of their earnings, while the introduction of its new returns policy for buyers enables them to shop with confidence.

Previously, sellers paid a 10% commission plus a 2.9% plus 50 cents payment-processing fees. To be clear, under the new no-selling fees policy, sellers won't have to pay the commission. Sellers won't have to pay the payment-processing fees either - buyers will. There are no changes to shipping options and policies.

Mercari US CEO John Lagerling said in Wednesday's announcement, "We expect this new business model to give us an even greater lead in offering the best inventory to shoppers across the country, particularly in the most exciting categories that Mercari users have come to recognize us for."

Sellers recently debated the impact of a marketplace instituting buyer fees in comments on the EcommerceBytes Blog on Sunday. While the post discussed possible ramifications of buyer fees on eBay purely hypothetically (eBay has not indicated or announced any plans to add a buyer's premium), the comments give an indication of how sellers might feel about Mercari's news.

One reader said hypothetical buying fees on eBay would send people to Amazon "even more often than they're doing already."

Another reader said buyer fees might work on high value collectibles where they're already accustomed to buyer premiums at auctions, but would be a dealbreaker for buyers of low-priced collectibles.

The big difference between the hypothetical scenario we posed in Sunday's blog post and Mercari's announcement today is that buyers are getting something in return for paying fees - a no-risk chance to back out of a sale within 3 days - something sellers might not be too keen on.

The new service fee for buyers is not optional and will be applied to all sales at checkout.

A seller emailed us the following notification they received from Mercari this morning, and the company provided a link to more information on its website:

- 0% Selling Fees: The selling fee for new listings will be 0%. That's right - what used to be a 10% selling fee is now 0% - zero selling fees!

- Listings created before 8:30 AM ET March 27, 2024 will be subject to a selling fee of 10% of the item price when a sale is completed, unless the listing has been updated on or after March 27, 2024.

- Buy with Confidence: Buyers will now be able to return items for any reason.

- Service Fee: When you make a purchase, a service fee will be charged. The amount of the fee will be displayed as part of the final price of your item(s) on the checkout page.

- Payment Processing and Withdrawal Fee: For listings created after 8:30 AM ET on March 27, 2024, Mercari will charge buyers a payment processing fee at the time of purchase. That includes a payment processing fee of $.50, plus 2.9% of the transaction price (includes item price, shipping, service fee, and sales tax).

- For listings created before March 27, 2024, a payment processing fee of 2.9% plus $.50 per sale is charged to the seller based on the completed sale, plus shipping price of the item - unless the listing is updated after March 27, 2024.

- Zero payment processing fees for buyers when using your balance.

- Direct Deposit: As always, you can request to cash out your balance to your checking account with direct deposit. Starting on this date, there is a $2 flat fee per cash-out.

Let us know what you think of the new marketplace model and who else is likely to adopt it.

Update 3/27/2024: Here's how the buyer friendly returns policy will work.

I think this was a big mistake for Mercari. As a seller being forced to take returns, it was an easy decision for me to pull all of my listings yesterday. It just doesn’t pencil out for me. I am a small seller and sell mostly clothing which can have a pretty high return rate and with seasonal items you have a very short window to move them. Every time a swimsuit gets returned, that window gets a little narrower.
Then there are the buyers. Buyers hate paying for shipping so how do you suppose they will feel about paying a buyers fee? So therefore they have managed to outrage both buyers and sellers. My god, what were they thinking?

On a couple of Facebook groups all the sellers are saying they are deleting their items and leaving Mercari. That buyers are not going to pay more for something. Most buyers on Mercari want everything for nothing as it is.

Redit’s Mercari group is filled with people closing accounts and going on “semi permanent vacation “ - I’m not doing it but many are.

No one likes to be surprised in the middle of the night and the way the CEO did it was %101 wrong. Surprises are for birthday parties not business

They could have just lowered their take abit and it would have all been fine - but no they had to go this way and piss everyone off.

Their stock isn’t doing well at all - and I can’t see it improving

“All you can eat returns “ was another bad move. While eBay cs is bad, Mercaris is WORSE. They like eBay always side for the buyer - even when the makers specs and the listing say otherwise. “ANY reason “ means they are eating too many chargebacks- not our fault but at least it’s 3 days unlike ebays “whenever “.

The San Jose mafias “trading” partner has been revealed”.

*** Maybe it’s all the junk ***

I’m sorry, but Mercari is filled with a bunch of junk. Maybe the reality is that Mercari can’t find enough Buyers to keep it going, so this shifted fee structure is the last attempt to keep Mercari alive.

Pokémon posters…Star Wars figurines….Who wants that junk anymore?

I lookup “handmade” on Mercari and it shows a beer charm attached to a key ring for $4.00.

I’m surprises Mercari has lasted as long as it has.

Just an observation. I sell items on Mercari that are low priced (mostly $5 to $20). These items have many time consuming details for listing on Ebay; Mercari is quick and easy. I source/buy lots of items on Mercari that are put into my variation listings on Ebay and Etsy - this has been profitable for me. Since the 3/27 change I have sold 3 items via offers from buyers that resulted in net profit higher than before change. I have bought 3 lots using funds in my account and was only charged a 5% service fee (not 10%?). There are buyers for used “junk”; remember someone did buy it new. Mercari now is like a flea market with an admission charge.

When selling low priced items on Mercari, Mercari makes very little money, which I’m sure is a big problem for the company.

While Mercari’s business model has someone mimicked Ebays business, Ebay has moved on to selling luxury products which has been a big money maker for Ebay.

Tech companies are expensive to run. This new fee structure is a sign of struggle for Mercari.

This sounds both counterintuitive and irrational.
Why not drop it to a flat 5% of the item cost, and harken back to the ebay of the 90's?

I deleted the app. which is sad,  because i bought quite a bit on mercari. Charging buyers a premium is crap. It's too bad.

@Stone Cutter:  "Ebay has moved on to selling luxury products which has been a big money maker for Ebay."
Are you sure about that?  According to Ina's reporting, Ebay revenue and number of buyers of these luxury items have been dead flat for the past several years.

Being “a bank” won’t work here - ask any seller who’s battled eBay when their funds get held.

No seller wants to “loan” Mercari money do they can subsidize someone else’s purchases or lifestyle

It’s not about the $2 - it’s about the fact that it cost them nothing so it should not cost sellers either. It’s THEIR money NOT mercaris.

Mercari made a lot of mistakes with this roll out - the REAL issue is - now that they made the changes - have your sales improve????

Wow this is crazy. I’ve been a seller for over 5 years. Left Poshmark a few years ago because of the high shipping fees. To have to pay to put money in my bank. Final straw.
The returns people think are no big deal. I disagree. I’ve had a few buyers who wanted to but in both cases with pics they couldn’t. Now they state “Returns for ANY reason”. Big difference. I think this will do them in. Not happy with this at all. What a joke.

Whether it's good or bad, props to Mercari for trying such a bold move.  many segments of buyers are already used to added fees on purchases,  i.e., collectors who buy at auctions, anyone who uses Ticketmaster, or anyone who books hotels or other travel.  Mercari's move could be a massive failure, or industry changing.  I'll be really interested to see how it works out.

Wanted to post back after the weekend to say how it was.  I had my biggest sales in quite awhile. Instead of turning down those offers I accepted 6. I actually made more oney than if the had bought the items under the old format. Fluke? Not sure. I will say that my 2 other venues also had banner weekends. Why? again no clue.  I did not lower my items 10% and when I tried to promote items 80% of the time Mercari demanded that I drop the prices - most of the time by $10. I declined that generous offer and move on. I am not online to make a mult-million dollar CEO richer. I don't need to make a big profit just cover my expenses at least. Getting my initial investment back if ok.

Here's my take on this change. Mercari has a bad rep for low-ballers lurking around for product to re-sell elsewhere. Mercari had ridiculous sellers who sell things for a buck. ???? I think this is about Mercari growing up. Sure alot of clothes sellers left this weekend - how long has that been a problem - selling used clothes online. Those people should start their own site - put the work in and understand the real problem with reselling used clothes. I sure don't want to do that much work. I will continue to just wait it out with Mercari. See hw the field clears out - see if the buying habits change - see what happens with returns.

For me - I give this past weekend a thumbs up - let's see how April goes.

and Ina may want to investigate reddit. Mercari reddit boards are alleging during the transition sellers were charged both selling fees as well as the deposit fee  and wonder if they applied the buyer premium  on  those transactions as well. I have no idea  if this is true, just reading reddit.
