eBay Sellers Desperate after GoDaddy Bookkeeping Ends Support

Online sellers are scrambling after learning today they'll no longer be able to use GoDaddy Bookkeeping to track expenses and prepare their taxes. eBay sellers in particular are desperately seeking alternatives.

One seller told us, "This is major, Ina, as I don't know if QuickBooks even has the ability to import our eBay sales, let alone from multiple eBay stores."

GoDaddy sent the following message to customers this morning:

Online Bookkeeping will retire in 30 days.
After much consideration, we've made the decision to discontinue Online Bookkeeping on June 18, 2022. At that time, the Online Bookkeeping tool will stop importing transactions from your connected channels and your existing data will be archived. To provide you with the best possible experience going forward, we've partnered with Intuit to offer you a special discount on QuickBooks Online.

You have until September 30 to download your Online Bookkeeping content. You can either move your data to QuickBooks using our migration tool or export your .csv file and import it to another accounting platform. You'll receive a prorated return for any time remaining on your term.

We appreciate your business and are here to help make your transition as smooth as possible.

Our reader explained the dilemma he and online sellers faced:

"We've been using Go Daddy bookkeeping for over a decade, so this is really bad news. At only $10 and some change/month, it's been the most affordable bookkeeping system we found for importing eBay sales and for preparing for our taxes.

"Does anyone have suggestions besides QuickBooks? Or, does anyone know if QuickBooks can import multiple eBay stores?

"I’m sure QuickBooks is far more expensive than what we've been paying for Go Daddy bookkeeping. So disappointed in this news."

Quickbooks Online pricing is available on this page, and GoDaddy provided the following faq about the discount it had negotiated for its users, which is good for one year:

How much will Intuit's QuickBooks Online cost me?
We have negotiated a good deal for you on QuickBooks Online. You can get 40% off the subscription fee for the first year on any of the plans, starting at $25/month. For comparison, if you were using the GoDaddy Bookkeeping Essential plan, you should find most of its features in Quickbooks online "Simple start" plan.

We had heard rumblings in March about GoDaddy Bookkeeping's possible demise and had reached out to the company. A GoDaddy spokesperson initially said, "We still offer GoDaddy Bookkeeping for sale to our customers and we haven't sent any notifications that we're discontinuing the product," and in a follow-up note, wrote, "We checked and customers can still set up new accounts by calling in. We're still looking into the other details and will be in touch."

Unfortunately by waiting until today to confirm the news, it leaves sellers only 30 days to search for an alternative and get it up and running. We sent another inquiry to GoDaddy this morning.

Some sellers discussing the news online were skeptical, fearing it was a phishing email, but in a faq on its website ("Why is GoDaddy Online Bookkeeping being discontinued?"), the company wrote the following:

"GoDaddy Bookkeeping has a great set of features that meet customer's need and is nominally priced. Over these years, we have worked hard to ensure the reliability and performance of the product. But the company's strategic priorities have shifted away from bookkeeping and we may not give the full attention this product desires. Other bookkeeping tools on the market may be good fit for your needs in the future."

We'll keep an eye out for any announcement from eBay or other marketplaces - if you get one, please forward it to us and we'll share it here. And please share your suggestions for colleagues about alternative bookkeeping tools that integrate with ecommerce platforms along with the costs of using them.

We dropped GoDaddy years ago. Use MyCostPro for eBay. Simple easy eBay accounting with really good support.

I am not affiliated with them at all.

This is like PayPal no  longer providing mailing labels - companies find what is most profitable for them and focus on that, dropping other "distractions".

We have an in-house software package I actually wrote over 20 years, so it is easy to maintain for us (I started writing this back in 1977 and ported it to several platforms as PCs evolved).  But I decided that using it on a Windows PC was the best long-term solution, and I OWN IT.

Remember, "The Cloud" is nothing more than a fancy name for "Someone Else's Computer", and what you don't possess will only be temporary.

I use PayPal to do my book keeping and have been using it since 2002.
That is the reason I quit eBay since I can not use PayPal anymore.

I was not a customer of GoDaddy's bookkeeping service but I'm still disapointed . I'm kind of locked in to Quickbooks (the desktop - I won't touch their online product) and a lack of options will make the situation worse.  Quickbooks (and most Intuit products) are already a near monopoly and there products reflect it.  Crappy design, constant barrage of pop up ads, requiring you to sign in to use a DESKTOP product, plus required upgrades even though the essential functions have not changed in hundreds of years (accounting).

What pisses me off is that Outright was a great accounting service before GoDaddy bought them. Ask yourself this: why didn't they sell it to someone instead of pulling the rug out from under what has to be 10s of thousands of customers?

After some additional research and conversations with OneSaas support, it appears that the eBay connector does not fully support Managed Payments. It seems to be more oriented to capturing sales and orders, the domain of many third-party applications like SixBit that are far more effective than QuickBooks would be for fulfilling orders.

The QB agent stated that eBay's fees not related to specific orders are not captured. Postage, monthly fees, and listing fees are reported in downloadable MP transaction reports. Does the eBay API allow applications to capture Managed Payments transactions? If not, automated downloads of transaction reports and removing crud from the first few lines of downloaded files would take significant development effort and would require constant maintenance each time eBay adds or removes columns from the report, something they do frequently.

The worst news of all is that the Intuit QuickBooks connector is limited to one eBay account. I suppose that separate companies could be used, at extra cost, but would they be able to share one business checking account?

If rolled up eBay Payouts data may be manually imported into QuickBooks. Partial automation of the onerous data cleaning process needed to capture transactions should be possible. If totals for sales and fees by category are imported, cluttering up QuickBooks with irrelevant transaction details can be avoided.

It is too bad that eBay does not bother to sum sales and fees by category in Managed Payment detail reports. It is eBay's intransigent failure to provide useable basic accounting data to sellers that prompted me to look into converting to QuickBooks Online with the promise, unfulfilled, of a eBay connector useful for accounting. Fortunately, I did not start using GoDaddy accounting after a dismal experience with their image file storage software.

Just discovered Xero for accounting + Link My Books for eBay (and Amazon). There's a video on YouTube where someone uses them together. One click to send eBay/Amazon settlements (payouts) from LMB over to Xero, and it breaks down all the tax/cost information for your P&L. And LMB has great support. Xero is cheaper than QB too. Check them out. #notsponsored
