Online marketplace Bonanza.com launched a new digital downloads feature for its Platinum Pro members. Sellers can now sell items including training videos, ebooks, sewing patterns, recipes and more.
“The beauty of digital downloads,” Bonanza said, “is that it’s a great source of passive income. Once you make the product, it can be sold and downloaded over and over again – without any seller intervention. And it’s great for buyers, because they can get the product immediately after purchase. No more waiting around for the delivery truck.”
Etsy also allows digital content on its marketplace, and it helps fulfill digital orders automatically. Interestingly eBay once had a thriving digital content category, but it banned digital content in 2008 over concerns about feedback manipulation, though a former employee later indicated it may have been due to eBay’s inability to see a return on investment. Late last year, eBay created a new digital category for comics, but as we noted at the time, you can’t actually buy (or sell) digital comics directly on eBay – you are taken to a third-party marketplace to make your purchase.
In order to list digital goods on Bonanza, sellers must select the “Digital Goods” category or one of its subcategories, at which point the “Shipping Options” section will change to reveal an upload form. Sellers must adjust the quantity assuming they want to sell more than one copy of the digital item.
Bonanza said sellers would not be able to remove a digital file from their listing once a sale is made, but they can put the listing on “Reserve” and create a new listing.
