Amazon Invites Farmers to Sell Online

Amazon sees opportunity in agricultural goods, and last week, it attended the 2016 World Ag Expo, to talk to farmers face to face, according to the Visalia Times-Delta newspaper.

Amazon’s lawn and garden category manager John Reiser attended the event in California with two other Amazon executives, according to the newspaper. In addition to talking to attendees at the show, the company held a seminar.

Reiser said that farming was a relatively new area for Amazon, but said seeds, pesticides and chicken coops were already among its bigger sellers in the lawn-and-garden category. He said Amazon wants to expand the variety of products sold there and the number of vendors involved.

About 50 people attended an “Amazon Marketplace 101” seminar during the show. Amazon executives told attendees they could sell products in small increments or by the ton, but pointed out that there were limits and laws applying to certain goods such as livestock that had to be followed.

Amazon’s presence at the show appears to be part research, part sales pitch. Reiser told attendees of the seminar, “If you don’t have that presence online, a lot of people won’t know your product’s out there.”

You can find the article describing Amazon’s presence at the event on the Visalia Times-Delta website.
