Etsy Leaves Costly Glitch Lingering for Over 7 Months

Sellers outside the US have reported for over 7 months that Etsy has undercharged some buyers for their international orders, forcing sellers to either pay the difference out of their own funds or else cancel the order and look bad.

There are threads about the issue going back to May, but Etsy has not responded to sellers on any of the threads we reviewed.

Some sellers attributed the glitch to a feature introduced in 2021 in “export-focused markets” so sellers could set one price for their domestic sales and a different price for their international sales. “This will give you the chance to grow your local business while expanding globally,” Etsy had announced in 2021. “Plus, with Domestic & global pricing you can offer free shipping,” it had written.

Ecommerce consultant Cindy Baldassi, aka cindylouwho2, reported this week that sellers were starting to get refunds from Etsy – but sellers have to proactively request the refunds.

On December 17, a seller confirmed that Etsy had refunded them the charges caused by the glitch: “I asked Etsy for a refund of charges this morning due to the bug causing international customers to be charged domestic pricing – I’ve spotted 29 orders with this problem in total – they refunded me straight away, so definitely keep a tally and ask for them to refund you!”
