eBay buyers and sellers raised nearly $162 million in 2023 for nonprofits around the world through the eBay for Charity program. That’s nearly flat from 2022 when the program helped raise $163 million – which had been a 12% increase over 2021.
eBay CEO Jamie Iannone was part of the team that founded the program in 2003 (he later left the company and returned as CEO in 2020). The program has helped raise over $1.3 billion in its 20 years of existence.
As eBay explained in an announcement this week, “Buyers can purchase items in support of their favorite charities or add donations at checkout. Sellers can choose to donate a percentage of their sales to a charity. And charities can sell on eBay to achieve their fundraising goals.”
It would be interesting to know if Amazon’s decision to close the Amazon Smile program for charities on February 20, 2023, had any beneficial impact on eBay for Charity.
