Visa Expects 18 Percent Growth in Online Holiday Shopping

Visa says more consumers than ever will turn to online shopping, with 47% of consumers planning to complete their holiday shopping online. The following post was published on the Visa blog on Monday.

According to a recent Visa study, online spending is expected to increase by at least 18% this holiday season. With Thanksgiving nearly upon us, many Americans are starting to think about what to include on their holiday shopping lists; but many of these shoppers have already decided how they will do their shopping this holiday season: online.

Visa, a leader in digital payments, predicts that many Americans will be turning to their tablets, phones and computers this holiday season, making 2016 the busiest online shopping season ever in the US. According to a consumer study by Visa, this holiday season:

  • 47% of shoppers plan to complete their holiday shopping online;
  • 33% of consumers anticipate buying gifts from phones and tablets;
  • Nearly a quarter of these mobile device shoppers come from the millennial generation (ages 18-34) who turn to their mobile devices for nearly everything.

Consumers are turning to shopping digitally more frequently due to the ease of making online purchases. While convenience is a major reason Americans are shopping online more, the many deals to be found online this holiday season also play a part.

One of the fastest-growing consumer products in the company’s history, Visa Checkout now has more than 15 million consumer accounts. Hundreds of thousands of merchants and more than 1,400 financial institution partners now offer Visa Checkout in 16 countries around the world; expansion into five additional European countries and India will take place by the end of 2016.

Visa also provided a preview of some of the deals users will get this holiday season when they pay with Visa Checkout. Visit VisaCheckout.com or look for the Visa Checkout button at your favorite online retailers to learn about more great deals.
