eBay Entices Sellers to Try CPC Ads with 75%-Off Sale

eBay is running a sale on its CPC ads to entice sellers to try them. The offer is by invitation only and offers 75% off the cost of Promoted Listings Advanced ads during the promotion.

“Cost-per-click” (CPC) means sellers pay eBay any time a shopper clicks on their ad, regardless of whether the shopper makes a purchase. (That’s unlike other Promoted Listing ad types where sellers pay only when eBay determines an ad has resulted in a sale, including through a Halo effect.) As eBay stated in the invitation, “No guarantee is made that any item will be promoted, or will sell at a particular price or at all.”

According to eBay CEO Jamie Iannone, 2.9 million sellers have used at least one of eBay’s ad products across 900 million listings of its 2 billion listings. Making the remarks during Monday’s presentation at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom conference, Iannone said eBay has a 2.1% penetration of advertising, which has doubled from 2019, and he said he sees a path to 3% penetration.

Iannone also told conference attendees that its CPC Promoted Listings Advanced product was eBay’s fastest grower in the advertising portfolio in the last quarter and the largest contributor to sequential growth as part of the advertising portfolio.

Iannone said the eBay CPC ad product has always had great adoption from largest C2C sellers who know how to use it, and eBay is making it easier to use for less sophisticated sellers. He cited new features including Suggested Campaigns; Smart Targeting (which uses decision rules and AI to do the bidding for the sellers); and Rules Based Decisioning.

In its eBay PL-Advanced promotional invitation to invited sellers, eBay stated, “This cost-per-click advertising solution provides priority access to ad placements on eBay, and comes with advanced campaign management options to help you reach the right audience for your listings.”

Invited eBay sellers should read all terms and conditions of the promotion – for example, the 75% offer is capped at $200. Invited sellers must first activate the promotion, which runs through March 31, 2024, and, “Immediately following activation, you will be informed of the start date of your discount.”

eBay published the following video to YouTube sharing a presentation the company made at the September 2023 eBay Open seller conference about eBay Promoted Listings Advanced:
