Buyers Can Proceed with Purchase even if eBay Authenticators Find Listing Discrepancy

eBay will let buyers proceed with the purchase of a luxury item even if the marketplace discovers a discrepancy in “condition” between the seller’s listing and what its authenticators discover when inspecting the item in person.

eBay launched the current iteration of Authenticity Guarantee in the Luxury Watches category in 2020, and it has expanded to other focus categories since then. eBay has authenticated over 7 million items globally in that time, the company told attendees of its seller conference this week.

On Thursday, eBay announced upcoming changes to the Authenticity Guarantee process in the Handbags category:

“Our current Handbags authentication process includes 2 steps – 1. Authentication and 2. Listing accuracy. In some cases, items can be authentic but our experts discover a discrepancy between the item and what was described in the listing. When this happens, eBay communicates to the buyer what the discrepancy is and gives the buyer the opportunity to either proceed with the transaction or return the item back to the seller.

“In the new experience launching at the end of September, both buyers and sellers will be alerted when a discrepancy is found with details of the issue.”

eBay will notify sellers when “listing accuracy” issue is found. It will also notify buyers along with a request for buyers to respond to a new “Inspection Details” page.

eBay will start rolling out the new process in the Handbags category this year, and “will start ramping up to other categories and markets in the first half of 2024.”
