eBay Publishes Survey Results Showing the Level of Seller Optimism

eBay surveyed over 4,000 small businesses who sell on its platform and published the research on Wednesday. Conducted by GlobeScan, the survey included sellers in the US, UK, Germany, Canada, Japan, and Australia.

Among the key findings eBay highlighted in its announcement were the following:

  • 94% of sellers see a strong connection between eBay and their success.
  • 68% of sellers say eBay helped them start their business; 76% say eBay helped them grow.
  • Most sellers are optimistic about the growth of their business, despite uncertainty about the economy.

But the numbers behind the statement regarding sellers’ optimism show a surprising fact – while 68% of respondents said they expected their business on eBay to increase over the next five years, only 55% said they expected their overall business to grow in the next 12 months.

Of that 55%, 21% said their business would “improve a lot,” and 34% said it would “improve a little. Of the remaining sellers, 24% said they expected their business to “stay the same” in the next 12 months, 14% expect business revenue to “decline a little,” and 7% expect it to “Decline a lot.”

In total, 94% of eBay sellers said that eBay was important to their business. When asked, “Which of the following best describes your business’ connection to eBay?,” 29% said “My business would not be able to exist without eBay”; 36% said “My business relies a lot on eBay”; and 29% said “My business is helped by eBay.”

eBay’s goal in conducting the survey was to assess small business seller sentiment and opinions toward eBay as they started and grew their business. More information is available on a post on eBay Inc website, which includes a link to more data.

  1. 4000 sellers surveyed. Thats funny. Again ebay paints the numbers. Like everything else sleezebay does. They are worst than the parasites in DC.

  2. Of course they said ebay helped them, without ebay they couldn’t sell on ebay. So they surveyed .00000000001% of all sellers.

  3. How did they chose these 4000 sellers, randomly? Or were these the connected few who get the special CS help that others have to go to the Philippines and hope and pray to get.

  4. These 4,000 must be those social media “influencers” that eBay was trying to buy off with Codes of Silence (aka Non-Disclosure Agreement lawyer-speak blah blah) referenced a while ago all over ecommerce news.

  5. Quote: “94% of sellers see a strong connection between eBay and their success.”

That was a very nice morning joke.
