eBay’s Latest Move to Get People Selling

“People want what you got,” eBay is telling users in a new marketing campaign to get consumers selling unwanted items. On Thursday, eBay tried to gain some attention in consumer publications by issuing a press release about its partnership with organizational expert Marie Kondo along with news of a new sweepstakes.

Kondo created an exclusive guide for parents seeking to declutter and to raise cash for back-to-school shopping that is available on the eBay website. Naturally she proposes readers sell unwanted goods on eBay, such as her tip around clothing: “Since clothing, handbags and shoes are some of the bestsellers on eBay, you may choose to sell some of the fashion items that aren’t bringing you joy.”

The guide is a tie-in with the new sweepstakes in which eBay will give the winner a “Tidying Consultation with Ms. Kondo.”

“Ms. Kondo’s consulting business in Tokyo helps people transform their cluttered homes into spaces of serenity. She typically has a three-month long waiting list for prospective clients, but one lucky winner will be granted a tidying consultation this fall,” eBay explains.

The promotion kicked off on August 27 and runs through September 2nd and is for anyone who would like to demonstrate how they’ve employed the KonMari Method at home. More information about the sweepstakes is available here.

eBay is also running a promotion through the end of August to get consumers to use its eBay Valet consignment service to sell unwanted goods, as we previously reported.
