eBay Encourages Sellers to Use Best Offer in Their Listings

It’s always difficult to know if eBay prefers sellers to run auctions or fixed-price listings, auctions with a fixed-price option, or fixed-price listings with a “make an offer” option. And its preferences seem to change over time.

This week, eBay launched a promotion for select US sellers with the theme of “spring cleaning” – turn spring-cleaning into a big payoff, eBay stated on the landing page. It also advised sellers to “Boost sales by 70% – When you use Best Offer, you’re in control” – though offering Best Offer is not a requirement of the promotion.

eBay went on to encourage recipients of the promotion to use Best Offer, writing, “Accept, reject, or make a counteroffer to get the right price. Negotiate with more than one buyer and choose from multiple offers. Selling multiple items? Let buyers make offers on more than one item.”

The Spring Cleaning promotion allows invited sellers to list up to 2,000 fixed-price listings and pay no listing fees. Sellers must activate the offer in order to receive the promotional rate.

Take notice of the fine print – for instance: “The Promotion only applies to listings with 30-day or Good ‘Til Cancelled duration, and does not apply to final value fees or optional advanced listing upgrade and supplemental service fees.”

The promotion kicked off on March 22 and runs through March 27, 2016. All other fees apply, read your invitation for details and restrictions.
