As Top 10 Marketplaces Voting Begins, What About the Others?

By: Ina and David Steiner

Last week, as the Sellers Choice nominations process was winding down, an interesting comment appeared on our blog:

"Since you are doing your annual e-commerce survey, which narrows your selection down to the big e-commerce sites (eBay, Etsy, Amazon, Ruby Lane, etc.) would you include more information about the smaller and up-and-coming web sites. Perhaps, using the data you collect with this survey, you can produce an additional report on the trending new sites. It's obvious that eBay's current policies will lead to the eventual discarding of the bulk of the Mom & Pop sellers that made it what it is today. These sellers need to know where to go and where they'll be welcome."

It was interesting timing, as we noticed an increasing number of smaller sites appear in the nominations this year. While they still had a way to go before cracking the top 10, they had a sizeable number of votes and write-ins.

Many of the runners up included niche sites, such as:

- Addoway
- Artyah
- Artfire
- Delcampe
- Discogs
- Mercari
- Poshmark
- Reverb
- TIAS
- TopHatter

Classifieds sites/apps also had some fans: LetGo, Offerup, and Kijiji, as did social networking sites Pinterest and Instagram.

If you've had experience using any of these (or other) sites, now's your chance to talk them up! How are your Sales on these sites? What do you like about them, and what would you change? Which ones would you recommend to friends and family as selling (and buying) venues, and why?

Chairish has been a great experience and profitable for us.  Limited to Home Decor, but that encompasses alot.  They have a listing agreement with ebay, so we have transfered many of our ebay listings over.  They charge 20% once your item is sold, no listing fee, just keep the charges in mind when pricing.

Shipping is a snap if you let them handle it, or you can charge your own fees for shipping.  Very simple to load items, they don't accept everything, but you learn pretty quick what will be approved. Especially good for your high end pieces, minimum price is $25.  Customer service is very good.

Your items are there forever until sold or you take them off, no feedback to deal with, no buyer back and forth to deal with, very few returns.

Toucandeal is trying to give a good shot at being an alternative to Ebay for smaller dealers.

I've posted a few times about Delcampe, a site set up specifically for collectibles, but it's a lot more than the average stamps, coins and other more common collectibles. It includes just about anything and everything that you could ever image people collect. And they now have over 1 million buyers with over 80 million items listed for sale.

List for free either auction or straight sale, and include whatever you have listed on your own website or elsewhere (they even encourage it) Close sales at any time with no repercussions. Free basic store front or for a $60 yearly fee get more enhanced features and capabilities. Set your own terms for payment and shipping, add surcharges for PayPal or other payment service fees if you want, etc. Selling fees are 7.5% or less based on your total monthly sales, not each individual sale.

Have a problem, email customer service and they get back within 24 hours. Post to their message board and someone responds directly, usually within a few hours.

Plus communicate directly with anyone on the site, include anything you want in system messages or direct emails. Take a sale offline or make a trade, do whatever you want. I've made a number of long time friends on Delcampe that share similar interests.

Plus I had more sales in a year on Delcampe than I did in over 15 years on eBay!!! My category is virtually dead on eBay with not more than about 400 items currently listed while there are over 11,000 items on Delcampe.

The site originates from Belgium so some of the categories take a little getting used to and some things are missing but overall it's the go to place for anything collectible.

I have been selling on Reverb, a niche music gear and accessories site, for 3 years. I make almost as many sales there as I do on Amazon. It is well laid out, well run, responsive to seller concerns-- I really like the site a lot. It's easy to set up, easy to use, no monthly fee and very reasonable transaction fees. I've done well and been happy there.

I also sold on Artfire for 4 years and did extremely well until-- I don't know what happened. They just fell apart for some reason. I have been gone from there for some time but what's funny is I still get inquiries and my listings still show up on pages 1 or 2 of Google. Artfire did teach me about SEO and that information has proven invaluable.

The main reason I left was that my sales plummeted when they redid their categories and eliminated music instruments and accessories. I see that they have recreated that category so I just might give them another shot.

I closed my account with Discogs.  Tophatter is overrun with Chinese sellers.  The best thing to do is go to Youtube and watch the reviews from sellers who have experience on the site.  I saw a scathing review of Poshmark, it seems they're changing to the point that sellers aren't making money.

What is Addoway, and why don't we hear/see these sites mentioned somewhere?  How do people find these sites?

Hmmm....so Addoway seems to be a Chinese site?  I checked the location of sellers and it lists "USA" but the names are Chinese.  So they could be drop shipper from China.

ABEBooks.com has expanded beyond selling books to include Fine Art & Collectibles including ephemera; has anyone had experience selling these items there?

although I despise monopolies I must say having so many of these local list & sell sites around is diluting the marketplace in general. I would prefer 1 site that gets the traffic and right now I am going with Facebook Marketplace

Mercari is a phone app that I've been using to move items that are sitting around for too long.  They have a lot of categories, even Handmade, and their seller support is good, although slow to get back to you.  I saw some scary reviews about sellers who got ripped off, but I think that was for high-end jewelry or goods; I've not had a problem with my little offerings.

I looked at Mercari, but I could do just as well on Craigslist.  I like being on AMZ and EB, but they're becoming so restrictive.  I think EB is trying to figure out how to compete against Poshmark which is blowing up and compete against AMZ.  They're trying to reconfigure the website and doing this&that and none of seems to help small sellers much.  I have one item on FB Marketplace to test and no replies.

You are all welcome to join us on Toucandeal! :D True case: Seller with over 12,000 items had no sales for over 2 years on our site. We edited about 10,000 of their listings (using the bulk editor, took about 2 hours) and since then, they get sales just about every day (and some days multiple sales). We hope you join us too and share your new store with everyone! Thanks!

Artyah is a wonderful website for Crafts, Art, Vintage, Home-decor etc. The thing I like most is the response from a live person in customer service. Imagine that, a real voice, Etsy take note. Take a look at Artyah, and imagine that: they are always welcoming your suggestions, and are constantly improving!
To list they take .10 for 120 days, and 3 1/2%  from the final sale.
Give it a try!

I love ArtYah. It is a ver y new and upcoming Handmade , Antiques and Vintage and also Supplies marketplace and the owner aims to keep it that way. This site is a very easy site to learn to use as a buyer or a seller. They only charge 10 cents a listing and a 3.5% final value fee. It is a site where the owner actually listens to the concerns of the sellers and works closely with them in trying to make a great site for sellers and buyer alike. They are presently in the process of building a complete new platform so they can furnish all the needs of the shop owners that they have asked for.
Craig, the owner actually goes to the forums to communicate with the sellers and listen to their concerns.
I can't wait for the new platform to be finished !!It will be GREAT!

Artyah is a great site. The owners are very responsive to sellers' needs, suggestions, etc. I can't say enough good about this site. All the sellers who complain about the "Big Sites" should check this one out.

I love working on Artyah where the owners are just as dedicated to creating a selling venue as we the artists are dedicated to making authentic handmade products. Their willingness to help in any way possible to make selling easier is first rate.
I understand that customers go to a store once they are aware that it is open and this takes time, so Artyah does not have the same traffic as Amazon or Ebay. I have made sales in the few months my shop has been open and with the current rate of fees, Artyah is very affordable.
If someone were to have an existing shop on another site and wanted to branch out, Artyah may be an option without great expense.
Also for first time shop owners, you could not pick a more helpful, patient group of people than those who operate Artyah.
Plus, Artyah truly offers unique, often ''one of a kind'' items from home decor to vintage finds to jewelry, jewelry supplies, toys etc. all handmade.
There will always be a market for ''something special, something original'' and Artyah may well be THE market place for just that in the near future.

Artyah is one of the few remaining listing venues dedicated to handmades, and Craig has vowed to keep it that way. It is easy to list using the single page interface. There have been upgrades and improvements to the site since I joined almost 2 years ago, but a new platform is being developed that will add other desired improvements. I really like that there is an onsite forum too, which is a feature that is fast disappearing from selling sites. It is also a pleasure to not have to compete with resellers, manufacturers and drop-shippers. Whenever I visit Artyah I always see outstanding handmades by skilled craftspeople. I'm looking forward to the new site. You should consider joining. It's a great place to specialize in that new brand that you've been wanting to try.

Artyah is a great up-and-coming site that has a lot of potential. I sell on Etsy and Ebay as well, and like to keep myself open to other options, so I added some items to Artyah, and have already made a couple sales. The owners/designers or Artyah seem to be really listening to what sellers and buyers need, and are continually evolving and improving. I expect it to only get bigger and better in the coming months. And the fees are very affordable, so it doesn't cost you too much to try it out.
