Etsy Surveys Sellers on Possible Fee Changes Ahead

By: Ina Steiner

Etsy surveyed sellers last week about changes to fees, including questions about new monthly subscriptions that could be a way to help larger sellers list more efficiently or cost effectively on its marketplace. We wrote about the survey in EcommerceBytes Newsflash along with seller reaction and factors that lend credence to fee changes ahead. Below is a closer look at some of the specifics of the changes Etsy may be considering.

Etsy displayed images of various configurations of subscription plans and asked respondents which plans they would choose for their Etsy Shop. The following information comes from images a reader forwarded to EcommerceBytes; note that Etsy may have shown different versions of the survey to different sellers.

One image showed two tiers: one free, one costing $10/month (no listing fees were shown). Among the perks of the $10 plan: 15 free listings; a $5 monthly credit for Etsy Ads or Offsite Ads; discounts for purchasing supplies on Etsy; and advanced shop customization.

A similar image showed two tiers: one for $5, one costing $20 (no listing fees were shown). The benefits offered in the $20 plan not offered in the $5 plan included: multi credential access; sales forecasting tools; a $5 monthly credit for Etsy Ads or Offsite Ads; and discounts for purchasing supplies on Etsy.

Another image showed three tiers and offered different commission fees: a free tier would charge the regular 6.5% transaction fee; a $5 tier would charge a 2.5% transaction fee; and a $20/month tier would charge zero commissions (which seems hard to believe).

Another image showed four tiers: free, $5, $15, and $25. It showed the first two tiers as charging 40-cent listing fees (double the current listing fee), while the two more expensive tiers charged the current 20-cent listing fee. In addition, under these tiers, sellers would be limited in how many listings they could run: 5 for Tier 1; 25 for Tier 2; 100 for Tier 3; and unlimited listings for Tier 4.

And another image showed four tiers: free, $5, $25, and $50, with the same listing fee and listing limits as described in the previous paragraph but with different perks for each tier.

As we pointed out in Newsflash, Etsy launched a subscription plan in 2018 - anyone with experience subscribing to Etsy Plus is invited to share their experiences in the comments.

Noticeably absent is the choice for ‘No fee change at all except round file that success ad fee baloney, thank you very much.’

Since I haven't had an active Etsy shop now for almost a decade, I didn't see the survey.

What does ''discount for purchasing supplies on Etsy'' mean?  Is it for shipping supplies or supplies sold by Etsy shops?

As a former vintage and antiques shop owner on Etsy, a shop with 5 or 25 listings doesn't work for that category of merchandise.  Even 100 listings might be too few for Etsy vintage shops that currently have hundreds of listings.  Of course, many reseller ''anchor shops'' on Etsy could easily pay any fees for the maximum number of listings, and a lot of smaller resellers (like the counterfeiters) usually have fewer than 25 item listings in their shops.

My guess is that the hard push to bring in more money is coming from the new investors/ sharks at Eliot Management.

It is clear as crystal that Etsy management has nothing but contempt for the hard working sellers that are the backbone of the site.   Instead, they look at us like cash cows- to be milked endlessly until we are dry.

There are never any initiatives that make it easier for buyers and sellers to connect.    Instead it's always yet another money grab wherein they pretend that it's for the good of the sellers.   See how they watch out for us!

I have never encountered such a bunch of lying hypocrites in all my years in business.   In fact, I wouldn't even call my shops a business- they have become a hobby that is getting more expensive every day.

I have tried everything that they have "suggested" aka forced on us, to no avail.   Every so often the bots or tech people (but I repeat myself) just turn off the faucet without warning and voila!  no sales for weeks.

It never used to be like that in the not so distant past.  If you worked hard on your listings, you saw results.   Not any more.

The federal government bureaucrats are always messing around in our affairs when it comes to regulation and overreach.   They even go after big corporations like FB, Twitter, etc.   yet they don't seem interested in the two biggest E-commerce sites at all.

In the case of etsy sellers, we have Taxation without Representation.   It's that simple.

These surveys are such BS.  They always appear to be designed to get the answers that they want.

As Snapped wrote, no choice for "no fee change"

Elliot Management lips attached to Etsy's teet like a greedy blood sucking tick. (my opinion).

none of these 'seller benefits' help the seller , more than pad the marketplace's bottom line:
"$5 monthly credit for Etsy Ads or Offsite Ads;
Discount for purchasing supplies on Etsy;
Access to Discounts and perks (custom shipping boxes, business cards)"

BUT, nothing is , what could best be described as, downright robbery like paid promotions (ads)
and should be made ILLEGAL,  as it is is totally unethical, to say the least,  for sellers to be charged for listings, then charged AGAIN to have them visible to buyers!

I have greatly limited my shopping on sites where the first few listings say anything like 'sponsered'
and if still do shop at (marketplace name redacted) I skip over any listings that say so....even if they coincidentally happen to have the lowest price or best offer (which is even more of a waste of the seller/ad buyer's money)

I won’t jump to any conclusions until Etsy finalizes any plan.

Also…
Etsy announced many years ago that Sellers need to self promote via Social Media, as Etsy has gotten too big with too many Sellers, and while Promoted Listings can only do so much. Not every shop can be on the first page, anymore.

NYSteve, I also skip over the Sponsored Ads listings when I am shopping. I hate the idea of them so much, especially on sites that are already charging a store or listing fee, that to participate in any way with them is just wrong.

If they fixed search, they'd ''make it up in volume.'' Sorry, I had to make a dot.com 1.0 reference. The new board (Elliott Investment Management) is basically going to take more money from sellers until all of the crafty stores leave. Then they're going to try to transform Etsy into a generic online retailer like Rakuten, Coupang, or Sears.

I would jump all over $20 a month no commission fee or any tier that offered a lower commission fee on sales.
