Online sellers will get a temporary respite from two brand-new types of fees that were hidden in the November 10th USPS press release announcing its January fee hike on Shipping services: the $1.50 Dimension Noncompliance Fee and the $4 and $15 Nonstandard Fees. Note that the USPS will go forward with its regular Shipping rate hike on January 9th.
The USPS had pointed out that the rate hike was an average "3.1% increase for Priority Mail service" and said, "Unlike some other shippers, the Postal Service does not add surcharges for residential delivery or regular Saturday delivery," while failing to point out it was adding steep new surcharges for nonstandard packages.
Anyone wanting details about the January 2022 rate hike had to go digging around in filings on the PRC website or on this page of the USPS website.
In a follow-up article, we explained that sellers of movie posters, for example, would pay a new $4 nonstandard fee for a tube greater than 22" and a new $15 nonstandard fee for a tube greater than 30" - on top of the postage cost they would normally pay. (We confirmed those fees with USPS spokesperson David P. Coleman.)
On Friday, the USPS informed the Postal Regulatory Commission it would delay the two new types of fees until April. "This brief delay is intended to provide the industry with additional time to plan and adjust for these changes, and aligns with our intent to be judicious in our pricing decisions and responsive to the needs of our customers."
The January shipping fee-hike will go into effect as planned on January 9, 2022, but the two new types of fees ranging from $1.50 to $15 will not go into effect until April 3, 2022.
That will provide sellers of products that are especially long to research alternative shipping methods. |
