Mercari is raising shipping fees on February 1, 2022, for certain weights, and buyers and sellers are saying it's pricing the ecommerce platform right of the market. "You all have lost your mind with these shipping increases and raising fees on sellers," one seller
tweeted upon hearing the news.
A reader who forwarded to EcommerceBytes the email notification that Mercari sent to users on Tuesday night said, "Can you address the shipping rates going up and how it's going to affect small sellers? It's killing the resale business."
Mercari sent the following notification to users about the new shipping rates (you can find an explanation of how shipping works on
this page of its website):
Each year, shipping carriers review their pricing and make rate adjustments. Given that carrier rates are increasing, shipping fees for Mercari prepaid labels are also increasing for certain weights starting February 1.
Here's what you need to know:
Updated shipping rates will apply to new listings starting February 1, 2022; Rates change on existing listings if the shipping option is updated
- Starting March 1, 2022, existing listings will be subject to the new rates too
- You can find updated rates by carrier posted here
We know that affordable and easy shipping is important - Mercari prepaid labels offer an average of 43% savings compared to the retail prices of our carriers (USPS, UPS, FedEx) and single price shipments to any of the 50 states. And, when you use a Mercari prepaid label, you get Shipping Protection for peace of mind. As a seller, if your item is lost or damaged in transit, you're covered up to $200. As always, you'll have the option to ship on your own.
Our team continues working hard to keep shipping easy and affordable, and on behalf of all of us, thanks for choosing Mercari as your marketplace
Best,
Team Mercari
Some other reactions on Twitter:
Talkeetnadayz (@CalidonTCB): .lol these shipping increases are outrageous. Time to delete @mercari_app and concentrate on @Poshmarkapp and @eBay instead. It's not worth it to sell on @mercari_app anymore (11:08 PM · Jan 25, 2022)
Stephenie (@S_DINH32): @mercari_app Holy Cow! What's up with the new shipping prices coming soon? It will no longer make sense to purchase or sell on the app! (7:11 PM · Jan 25, 2022)
The Twitter user Stephenie went on to explain in their Twitter thread that a book they had just purchased on Mercari for $9 would have cost $14 in shipping if they had waited until next week after the new rates take effect. "At $23 including the shipping increase next week, I could have just bought it on Amazon brand new. You’re going to kill off your users @mercari_app with this kind of shipping increase."
