UPS published its 2020 rates on its website on Monday without a press release announcement. It also failed to break out the average rate increase by service, such as UPS Ground.
Instead, it wrote, “the rates for UPS Ground, UPS Air and International services will increase an average net 4.9%.”
The new rates take effect on December 29, 2019. The company said the 2020 rate increase “supports ongoing expansion and capability enhancements as we strive to maintain the high service levels you expect from UPS.”
The rate change came to our attention via a tweet by logistics consultant Cathy Roberson. She said the devil was in the details – “looks like new charges including a rebill fee and prohibited item fee among other changes,” she tweeted.
She added, “Here’s what looks like a first…the cost to ship to a UPS Access Point Location goes from $1.50 this year to $0.00. Meanwhile, it looks like Delivery Area Surcharge fees are increasing a particularly good bit. Perhaps a move to get folks to use Access Point Locations?”
Note that UPS is going after more ecommerce market share from small and medium sized businesses. It recently announced the widespread availability of a flat-rate plan called UPS Simple Rate, you can find our Sellers Guide to Flat Rate Shipping in this month’s EcommerceBytes Update newsletter.
