eBay reminded members of its eBay Bucks loyalty program that as of the end of September, they will no longer be able to earn 50% or more through the program when purchasing on eBay using PayPal Credit.
eBay had offered the bonus Bucks in a special promotion that gave its best shoppers an incentive to use its PayPal Credit program. Members of the eBay Bucks program could make a purchase on eBay without having to pay immediately and receive the bonus 50% Bucks on eligible purchases up to $98.99; if they then paid their balance in full by the payment due date, they could avoid paying interest.
Those members of the loyalty program who made a purchase of $99 or more could receive bonus Bucks, and could make no payments with no interest if they paid in full in 6 months.
PayPal Credit had been called Bill Me Later, which PayPal’s then parent company eBay acquired in 2008. eBay recently settled with federal authorities, which had sought $25 million in penalties from PayPal for a series of alleged abuses of its credit service, including charges of deceptive advertising and signing up customers for the service without their knowledge. PayPal, without admitting or denying guilt, agreed to the consent order.
Members of the eBay Bucks program received an email recently with the reminder: “After September 30, 2015, you will no longer be able to earn 50% more in eBay Bucks when you make a purchase on eBay using PayPal Credit.”
