eBay Security Concerns Extend to Employees

eBay

eBay logoeBay wants to move quickly to build a fence around its headquarters in California for the safety and security of employees, according to the San Jose Mercury News. eBay told the city’s planning department it wants to build a “picket fence,” though according to the plans, much of the tube steel fencing is expected to be at least 7 feet tall, with both vehicular and pedestrian access gates.

The newspaper noted the shooting at YouTube’s headquarters in April by a person that, according to CNN, police determined was upset with YouTube’s policies.

eBay has had security concerns in the past for its executives. Last year, eBay’s board of directors encouraged CEO Devin Wenig to use the corporate airplane for personal travel “to reduce possible security concerns.”

And in 2009, the company compensated its head of eBay Marketplaces Lorrie Norrington over $24,000 for “Security Assistance,” according to SEC filings, which consisted of “costs and expenses related to home security systems.”

Update 9/22/18: An eBay spokesperson provided us with the following statement: “Every responsible company prioritizes the security of their employees, so they can focus all of their energy on delivering for their customers. The construction of a security fence around our large HQ campus is consistent with this approach.”
