Mercari Eliminates Selling Fees as It Adds Buyer Fees

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

Mercari is eliminating selling fees immediately, even as the costs of selling on other marketplaces continue to rise, but there are some caveats for sellers. The marketplace is introducing buyer fees, and it's instituting a very buyer-friendly returns policy, explaining in an announcement going out today:

"In addition to zero selling fees, Mercari is simplifying the buying experience with an all-new returns policy. As part of this policy shift, buyers will be charged a service fee allowing for hassle-free returns. For the first time ever, Mercari shoppers can now initiate a return within three days for any reason with the assurance of a refund, less applicable fees."

Mercari said the removal of selling fees will enable sellers to price their items more competitively and take home more of their earnings, while the introduction of its new returns policy for buyers enables them to shop with confidence.

Previously, sellers paid a 10% commission plus a 2.9% plus 50 cents payment-processing fees. To be clear, under the new no-selling fees policy, sellers won't have to pay the commission. Sellers won't have to pay the payment-processing fees either - buyers will. There are no changes to shipping options and policies.

Mercari US CEO John Lagerling said in Wednesday's announcement, "We expect this new business model to give us an even greater lead in offering the best inventory to shoppers across the country, particularly in the most exciting categories that Mercari users have come to recognize us for."

Sellers recently debated the impact of a marketplace instituting buyer fees in comments on the EcommerceBytes Blog on Sunday. While the post discussed possible ramifications of buyer fees on eBay purely hypothetically (eBay has not indicated or announced any plans to add a buyer's premium), the comments give an indication of how sellers might feel about Mercari's news.

One reader said hypothetical buying fees on eBay would send people to Amazon "even more often than they're doing already."

Another reader said buyer fees might work on high value collectibles where they're already accustomed to buyer premiums at auctions, but would be a dealbreaker for buyers of low-priced collectibles.

The big difference between the hypothetical scenario we posed in Sunday's blog post and Mercari's announcement today is that buyers are getting something in return for paying fees - a no-risk chance to back out of a sale within 3 days - something sellers might not be too keen on.

The new service fee for buyers is not optional and will be applied to all sales at checkout.

A seller emailed us the following notification they received from Mercari this morning, and the company provided a link to more information on its website:

- 0% Selling Fees: The selling fee for new listings will be 0%. That's right - what used to be a 10% selling fee is now 0% - zero selling fees!

- Listings created before 8:30 AM ET March 27, 2024 will be subject to a selling fee of 10% of the item price when a sale is completed, unless the listing has been updated on or after March 27, 2024.

- Buy with Confidence: Buyers will now be able to return items for any reason.

- Service Fee: When you make a purchase, a service fee will be charged. The amount of the fee will be displayed as part of the final price of your item(s) on the checkout page.

- Payment Processing and Withdrawal Fee: For listings created after 8:30 AM ET on March 27, 2024, Mercari will charge buyers a payment processing fee at the time of purchase. That includes a payment processing fee of $.50, plus 2.9% of the transaction price (includes item price, shipping, service fee, and sales tax).

- For listings created before March 27, 2024, a payment processing fee of 2.9% plus $.50 per sale is charged to the seller based on the completed sale, plus shipping price of the item - unless the listing is updated after March 27, 2024.

- Zero payment processing fees for buyers when using your balance.

- Direct Deposit: As always, you can request to cash out your balance to your checking account with direct deposit. Starting on this date, there is a $2 flat fee per cash-out.

Let us know what you think of the new marketplace model and who else is likely to adopt it.

Update 3/27/2024: Here's how the buyer friendly returns policy will work.

The Mercari forums are buzzing this morning!

I've only been a buyer on Mercari over the past 3 years.

Now I might become a seller there also.

But as a buyer on Mercari I'm not too happy about this.

Mercari will use the no selling fees to lure sellers on other sites to their site to sell their wares 18 months later once the influx slows they'll reintroduce selling fees thats how its done in real life. A ton of auction houses now charge a 15% buyers premium and a 20% sellers premium.....

If Mercari turns into a returns massacre then it’s no seller fees won’t matter at all.

They could have easily made seller fees %5 and not dreamed up the stupid returns idea or the back out of a sale in 3 days idea.

Is Mercari stupid enough to think that buyers will pay a fee upfront the return or back out and NOT want it back???

It’s just eBay 2.0 - with the fees shifting to other places - dumb.

HEADLINE NEWS ... while all the news titles mention Mercari has ''zero selling fees'' - WRONG - what all of these NEWS HEADLINES should read: MERCARI SHIFTS ALL FEES TO BUYERS!!!

I have made OVER 100-PURCHASES on Mercari since I found them a few years back as an ALTERNATIVE to eBay.  Now, as I understand it ... not only am I paying for the ITEM, SALES TAX, SHIPPING FEES, now I am EXPECTED TO PAY a ''BUYERS FEE'' as well as ''CREDIT CARD FEES'' on top of everything else???!!!  Ha ... ha ... ha ... ha ... ha ... ha ... ha!!!!!!!  NOT!

When I walk inside a STORE or RESTAURANT ... if I find they CHARGE EXTRA for use of a CREDIT CARD then I make note NOT to return!!  It has been the GOAL of BANKS to get BOTH the CONSUMER and BUSINESS to PAY for the use of CREDIT and DEBIT CARDS ... these days more and more merchants are trying to ''shift'' the fees to their customers.  If I have to PAY TO HAVE ACCESS TO MY MONEY then I will AVOID all such businesses.  I would support a business with a CASH and/or CHECK only rule ... but don't make me PAY MORE to SPEND MY MONEY!!

Not only does Mercari want me to PAY for the CREDIT CARD FEES ... now, I am EXPECTED to pay a BUYERS FEE as well?!!!  SORRY, it's BAD ENOUGH that I am stuck with SHIPPING FEES and SALES TAX ... this is all TOO MUCH!

SHIPPING FEES are the REAL DEAL KILLER ... it's funny how Amazon can ship just about everything for FREE and they are the ONLY business in the United States that I know of that is getting such a DEAL from the United States Postal Service (and HOW so?!!).  But, if I want to try and SUPPORT a SMALL SELLER online ... many times what I have to pay for SHIPPING can COST AS MUCH AS THE ITEM itself!!!  Now, a BUYER is EXPECTED TO PAY more than all of that?

I have a feeling that I will not be shopping with Mercari sellers going forward.

As far as RETURNS ... I already had 72-hours to make a RETURN or DISPUTE a purchase with Mercari if need be.  It was very rare to have an issue buying on Mercari.  This ''new return policy'' adds NO VALUE to me, a buyer, and having to pay MORE FEES!

PRICE ABUSE ... as it is, because Mercari has NO LISTING FEES already, you will sometimes see an item being sold for MUCH MORE than its ''true'' value.  Do you think I want to shop a marketplace knowing prices are ''jacked up'' because a seller knows they don't have to pay fees ... what will this NEW POLICY do?

I know sellers have to put forward a lot of effort just to list and then try to sell their goods online ... then they got blasted with more & even higher marketplace SELLER FEES, national SALES TAX COLLECTION bookkeeping, and now SALES VOLUME THRESHOLDS for the collection of FEDERAL & STATE INCOME TAXES!!!  I think that BOTH the ONLINE MARKETPLACES and GOVERNMENT is doing all that it can to DESTROY this online economy!  Should we all just go back to YARD SALES and SWAP MEETS?

I suppose ... the GOVERNMENT, the POST OFFICE, the BANK, and the ONLINE MARKETPLACE will make sure to get THEIR money!  HOW MUCH (if any) is left for SELLERS?

SORRY, everyone ... but this CONSUMER has just about had ENOUGH!!  When SHIPPING CHARGES turn out to be the DEAL KILLER ... DON'T EXPECT ME TO PAY MORE for BUYERS FEES and CREDIT CARD PROCESSING FEES!!!  Ha ... ha ... ha ... ha ... ha ... ha ... ha!!!!!!!

This initially sounded like selling on Mercari might be worth another look.  As I feared, though, there is important information missing.

What is the buyer fee?  If it's the same as the seller fees were, the only real difference is that sellers know upfront what they'll get.  Yes, you could work backwards before but it was only approximate because the fees were based in part on variable components (shipping, tax rates, etc).

When it says free return shipping for buyers, is that on Mercari or the seller?  There was a mention of sellers having to provide labels for items over 50lbs but it's not explicit on what happens under 50lbs.

What's the "nominal amount" under which they let the buyer just keep the item?  Although MSRPs are way up since I started selling, I'm still largely in that sub-$50 range.  I don't particularly like three days for any reason but it sounds like it could get really ugly really fast.

While I think it's great they're trying something else, the root problem has always been that fees outstripped my profit margin and drove prices up beyond the value I was delivering.  Shuffling those high fees around doesn't really do much to change that.  I might give this a shot but I don't harbor any illusions that it'll bring me back to e-commerce in any real capacity.

It all depends on your merchandise in the antique and collectible world you make your money at the time you purchase a item for resale, but with the new influx of cellphone google resellers they are being shown asking prices not selling prices so they are dead in the water before even getting started and for time spent they'd be more money ahead to go get a part time job at a convenience store..

@AddyUp

"Service fee                           $22.50"

This fee doesn't exist for either the seller or buyer under the new system.

The fee is 2.9% + .50 cents

eBay's in PANIC mode over this, it's going to change the whole industry as we know it.  Mercari will either sink or swim on this move.

Paying $2 to get a weeks worth of sales shouldn't be a big deal to most sellers.

Paying $3 is a luxury for instant deposit, both eBay & Paypal charge a fee for instant deposit.

Returns shouldn't be a big deal if you're selling good product at a good price.

I hope to still find the great deals I have over the past few years on Mercari and most of the items would still be a great deal even with a 2.9% tariff

Buh bye, sales! That's right, all you Muhcarry sellers salivating over this 0% fee better think again. None of the items on Muhcarry are prestigious enough that buyers would be willing to pay an extra fee (that's on top of that evil sales tax) just for the privilege of buying them. Expect even more lowball offers now. Or just wisely drop your prices.

Huh. If you people think eBay Customer Service is bad, wait until you have to deal with Muhcarry's. It's all stupid bots. You have to keep "escalating" (read: consumes your time) over and over and then you get a human. And then you have to hope that this human is intelligent enough to know what you are talking about. So, good luck!

I have been reading the Facebook comments ... some Mercari sellers say they will LOWER PRICES because BUYERS will now PAY the FEES (13%) ... ha! BUYERS are NO LONGER going to shop Mercari!! And, HOW would any buyer KNOW the PRICE the seller started with ... to ''DISCOUNT!''  YES, let's tell shoppers we are going to LOWER PRICES if they use SELF-CHECKOUT ... GIVE ME A BREAK!  BAIT-N-SWITCH ... thinking to ADVERTISE a LOW PRICE only to CHARGE EXTRA FEES!!! Reminds me of Las Vegas and their RESORT FEES 😡

***Let’s do simple math ***

@ Mark Nichols

You say….

“ some Mercari sellers say they will LOWER PRICES because BUYERS will now PAY the FEES (13%) ...”

YES, that is the correct approach. Sellers can reduce prices if Buyers pay those fees.

So here’s the question….
Why the new fee structure? I believe that Mercari wants lower price points on their site to attract Buyers. If not, Mercari may sink.

***Temu & Shein ***

Economic news says that Chinese Temu and Shein are major competitors to online sales as Chinese price points are crazy cheap. Amazon has stated that over 20% of their customer base now shops on Temu.

You are not the victim here if competition is thick, and Mercari is trying to survive.

This new fee structure does not cost Sellers anymore cash.

eBay C suite should actually be happy about this sea change by Mercari.   If I were in eBay management I'd launch a sale and ad campaign tomorrow:  Tired of buyer's fees? No fees for buyers on eBay!  (c)  (And eBay, advising you here I claim copyright on that idea, so pay up if you use it.)

@ Tool

You forgot the Selling fee that is now paid by the buyer.  That is the $22.50 fee in the example above.  On top of that the buyer pays 2.9% money processing fee and the 50 cent per transaction fees.

Buyers are not going to like this and I doubt Ebay feels threated by this move at all.

Many buyers can't or don't understand that sellers pay fees on these sites in the first place.  I can't tell you how many times over the years I've had to explain this to buyers.

They are not going to like at all having to pay these fees.  I mean they were all along in the price the seller sold them the item for, but now they can see exactly how much it is.

I would also thing there are going to be a whole lot of sellers that do NOT lower their prices.  They will try and see if they can make a little more under this new fee structure.

Just my opinion.

^^
This.  Add me to someone who shops TEMU almost as much as I shop Amazon.  In fact, I compare prices between the two before I decide what to buy.  Right now, Temu has a no questions asked returns policy for buyers.  PLUS, TEMU is starting a marketplace and may well start opening up warehouses like AMZ.
I think Mercari is sinking and is feeling the heat from Temu (and others).  I'm a seller on Merc but haven't sold anything on that site in a year.  Two years ago I got a 1099K from Merc, not this year.  That tells you how little (no) sales I've made.

It is likely that Mercari and it's sellers will see a large increase in Chargebacks due to only having a 3 day return policy.
