Sellers may encounter more cases of shipping surcharges, according to Refund Retriever, which reported that FedEx and UPS added 82 new delivery area surcharge ZIP codes to the existing Delivery Area Surcharge (DAS) list this month.
The delivery area surcharges range from $3.95 to $5.85, depending on the service and delivery location.
And to make bad news worse, the new ZIP codes cover some dense urban areas and impact almost 1% of the U.S. population, according to Refund Retriever, which said many cover significant urban population centers, including New York, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
The reason for carriers to target urban areas: to cover the additional expense of serving densely populated areas, which often require tolls to cross bridges or tunnels, with higher traffic congestion, the service explained.
Refund Retriever explained DAS surcharges in 2022 in the following YouTube video (view the carrier websites for the latest rates):
Oh well, at least with UPS and FedEx your packages don’t just magically disappear when they get to a distribution center / hub unlike with that sometimes-we-are-but-sometimes-we-are-also-not-a-govt-entity USPS.
These surchages are completely understandable given that urban areas are literally DANGEROUS and their delivery drivers’ lives are at risk!

Well, in my West Coast Urban area, drivers lives are not at risk and mail runs very smoothly. I’ve never had a problem with USPS – USPS is “golden” for my Etsy shop.
Inflation happens literally daily, as stated by this article..
Stoned11 says “Inflation happens literally daily, as stated by this article”
It has become really difficult to discern “inflation” from “greedflation”
Greedflation is out of control since the covid pandemic ended. For some of these companies, especially the public companies (Wall Street worshipers), no amount of money is enough.
