eBay and PayPal Begin Cutting 7 Percent of Workforce

eBay’s previously announced layoffs have begun this week, and though details are sketchy so far, it appears workers in India may be bearing the brunt of it.

Worldlypost.in reports that of the expected 2,400 global layoffs, 1,000 of those may come from units in India. “Around 2,800 employees from the firm’s eBay and PayPal are working in two development centres which located in Bangalore and Chennai,” it wrote on Sunday. “Reports put, 1000 employees would be laid off from Indian operations from the data gathered from sources known to it.”

Reports on social media also indicated layoffs had commenced in India:

“Paypal/eBay layoff is going on!!!”

“tomorrow in us., office is tense.”

“Engineers do not get laid, they get laid off #layoff #paypal #sarcasm #paypalebaysplit”

“Today will be the judgement day for many of us. #layoff”

One person from the Bay Area tweeted, “Today at EBay/PayPal 3000 people will be let go 2500 full time 500 contractors #layoff #ebay #paypal,” though it’s not clear if he’s an employee of eBay.

In response to request for confirmation and further details, eBay Inc. spokesperson Amanda Miller replied via email, “At earnings we announced that we plan to reduce our workforce globally by approximately 2,400 positions which represents about 7% of our total workforce across eBay Marketplaces, PayPal, and eBay Enterprise. We are not breaking it out by business unit or region.”
