Amazon Helps Fashion Shoppers with Visual Search

Amazon Fashion launched StyleSnap this week, a feature in its mobile app that lets shoppers use photographs or screenshots to shop a look they like. The feature is powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Amazon explained that StyleSnap uses computer vision and deep learning to identify apparel items in a photo, regardless of setting. Deep learning technology also helps classify the apparel items in the image into categories like “fit-and-flair dresses” or “flannel shirts.”

StyleSnap helps shoppers, but it also helps fashion influencers expand their communities. In addition, fashion influencers who participate in the Amazon Influencer Program are also eligible to receive commissions for purchases they inspire.

The CEO of Amazon Consumer Worldwide Jeff Wilke announced the feature at re: MARS, Amazon’s conference on Machine Learning, Automation, Robotics and Space taking place this week in Las Vegas. “The simplicity of the customer experience belies the complexity of the technology behind it,” Wilke said of the new feature.

Visual search itself has been around for a decade. In 2010, Google acquired Like.com, which was founded by Munjal Shah, who also founded eBay tools provider Andale.com 2 decades ago.
