Counterfeit goods have long been a concern for manufacturers and distributors of valuable products and services. They have been a downside to the growth of ecommerce, as unscrupulous types try to earn an ill-gotten living through the sales of fake items.
It’s a sensitive topic for Amazon.com. The company recently came under criticism regarding its operations in China, where Amazon has been accused of selling counterfeit books in the country via third party sellers.
While that situation is ongoing for the big online retailer, Amazon may be shifting a little more attention to its marketplace sellers domestically regarding the topic of counterfeit items. One recent Seller Central forum post at Amazon found a seller firing back regarding their recent account suspension.
The seller going by the username Roma Florence posted that their account, which sells items in the health and beauty section, had been under review for 20 days before receiving a suspension for selling counterfeit items.
“I can go through my inventory hundreds of times. There is not a particular product that would indicate the problem. I can have a positive feedback for a certain product and than(sic) for the very same product the buyer may write an email that he or she is not really happy with it,” the seller wrote.
Another poster, Oneida Books, shared in the thread an email from Amazon that noted how the company will “vigorously enforce our policies against the sale of inauthentic products.” Amazon also cautioned sellers against buying inventory from suppliers who aren’t known and trustworthy sources.
